Former Nigeria President Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday said he does not have a preferred candidate for the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking in Minna, Niger State capital during a visit to former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, Obasanjo said he only has a national agenda for Nigeria.

“I don’t have a special candidate,” Obasanjo, who ruled Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 said. “I have a national agenda.”

“I have come to see my brother who was a bit indisposed and when he was abroad I had wanted to visit him, and the day I arrived in London to visit him was the day he left.”

Obasanjo and Abubakar had a closed-door meeting for about 30 minutes.

The former president had met separately with Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and that of the Labour Party Peter Obi in less than two weeks.

After his meeting with Tinubu in Abeokuta, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila who was in attendance, said the APC candidate was sure of victory after the engagement.

However, a spokesman for Obasanjo, Kehinde Akinyemi, said the reports from Tinubu’s camp were far from the truth.

He noted that Obasanjo “is dissatisfied with reports about the meeting. The discussion during the visit was more brotherly than political.”

A week after the refutal, Obasanjo on Sunday, hinted that he has no political interest in the election to produce a successor for incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari.

While supporters of Tinubu claim to have his support, there are also insinuations that Obasanjo was consulting for Obi whom he was seen in photographs with during a meeting in London with Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike.

The Rivers State governor’s fallout with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar is yet to be resolved after series of meetings for a reconciliation ahead of the 2023 elections.
