The family of Mr.and Mrs George Ngongi has appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba, to prosecute the medical practitioners, who were involved in the operation that resulted in the death of their daughter, Ms. Yondoh Izong, on September 6, 2022 in Wuse 2, Abuja.

The family accused the suspect of lacking the requisite medical qualifications to practice the profession, in addition to using faulty and substandard surgical machines during the operation.

The family’s counsel, Elias Offor, in a separate petition addressed to the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department, Garki, Abuja, dated December 19, 2022, lamented the inability of the Police to act on the case.

Offor explained that Ms. Yondoh was booked for a cosmetic tummy reduction procedure with a fake or faulty cosmetic surgery machine and without requisite precautions taken by the alleged amateur practitioners.

The petitioner alleged that the patient convulsed violently shortly after the machine was fused on her tummy with some electronic sharp-edged surgical cords fitted with several needles, which resulted in her death in the clinic.

The lawyer said the autopsy report shows that “Ms. Yondoh died of food Aspiration Asphyxia,” confirming that the cosmetic machine was fake or faulty and that the deceased ought not to have taken any meal before the procedure i.e., it was supposed to be done on an empty stomach.

“There was no warning of any sort, coupled with the fact that blood samples were taken through her wrist, and an unknown liquid also administered on her before the procedure. Lacerations and needle wounds were also noticed respectively on her arm and lower abdomen showing that there were actual incisions on her body for a procedure that the quacks tagged non-surgical,” they claimed.

The family lamented that the Homicide section of the FCT police command had refused to charge the matter to court after several efforts.

The family lawyer said: “The Homicide section of the FCT Command has either not completed the investigation in this matter or they are waiting for their legal officers’ report on the matter. The culprits have, however, been going about their blossoming business, while the deceased family wallows in grief.”

“We dare say that if these practitioners are not checked and called to order, more deaths will be caused by their quack practices.”
