Sha’Carri Richardson made a triumphant return to the track on Friday night, winning the women’s 100m title at the U.S. Championships in 10.82 seconds. The victory was Richardson’s first national title, and it came two years after she was stripped of her title at the 2021 Olympic Trials after testing positive for marijuana.
Richardson got off to a slow start in the final, but she quickly made up ground and pulled away from the field in the final 50 meters. She crossed the finish line ahead of Brittany Brown (10.90) and Tamari Davis (10.99).
“I’m not back, I’m better,” Richardson said after the race. “I’m ready mentally, physically and emotionally, and I’m here to stay.”
Richardson’s victory is a major boost for her hopes of winning a medal at the World Championships in Budapest next month. She is the second-fastest woman in the world this year, behind only Jamaican Shericka Jackson.
Richardson’s return to the track has been met with a great deal of support from fans and athletes alike. She has been praised for her honesty and openness about her struggles, and she has become a role model for young athletes who are dealing with similar challenges.
“I’m just glad that I can be an inspiration to people,” Richardson said. “I want people to know that it’s okay to make mistakes, but it’s not okay to stay down.”
Richardson’s victory is a reminder that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. She has overcome a great deal of adversity in her life, but she has never given up on her dreams. She is an inspiration to us all, and we can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next.
